Studying in Magdeburg
Lowest living costs in our table — OvGU on the Elbe.
About Magdeburg
Magdeburg is Saxony-Anhalt's capital on the Elbe, rebuilt after heavy WWII damage. Otto von Guericke University (OvGU) is named for the local physicist who invented the vacuum pump. The city is practical, not pretty — but the Elbe cycling path and low rents attract budget-conscious students.
Student life
Studentenwerk Magdeburg halls are easier to access than Munich's lottery. Nightlife is modest; Leipzig is an hour for bigger gigs. Fewer English services day-to-day — German courses pay off. Factor travel to Berlin or Frankfurt for long-haul flights when comparing 'cheap'. OvGU's international programmes cluster in engineering and medicine.
