VPD vs APS

VPD vs APS: which one do Indian students need?

Uni-assist VPD is a document pre-check some universities ask for. APS India is a separate credential check. You may need one, both, or neither.

Summary: APS India verifies Indian academic credentials for many German university and visa files. Uni-assist VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) is a preliminary eligibility review that only some programmes demand. APS does not replace VPD. VPD does not replace APS. Read each university's admission page. Fees and timelines are separate.

VPD vs APS: which one do Indian students need?

Direct answer

APS and VPD are not two names for the same paper.

APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is a country-based credential check. For most Indian school and Bachelor files used in German higher education, APS India is the usual path. The certificate is used by universities and the visa file. It is run through the APS India portal (aps-india.de), not through uni-assist.

VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation) is a uni-assist product. It is a preliminary academic review for a specific university or programme. You need it only when that course page says “VPD required.” It does not replace APS. APS does not replace VPD.

Treat them as two independent checkboxes.

What each document actually does

APS India

APS India checks that your school and university records are genuine and complete for the German system. Typical Indian Master's applicants:

  1. Create an APS India portal account.
  2. Enter names exactly as in the passport.
  3. Pay the live portal fee (commonly about ₹18,000 — confirm checkout).
  4. Courier the document set.
  5. Wait for verification. Off-peak is often about 3–6 weeks; peak months (often September–February) can run about 4–12 weeks.
  6. If dMAT applies (selected Master's fields from Summer 2027), APS will not issue the certificate until the g.a.s.t. PDF is uploaded. dMAT is a separate €150 payment to g.a.s.t., not to APS India.

Where APS shows up later: uni-assist or university portals; CSP / student visa document lists for the Study-APS path.

Uni-assist VPD

VPD is uni-assist’s pre-check of whether your records fit that programme’s entry level. It can summarise qualification type, recognition notes, and converted grades for that procedure.

It is not:

  • a visa document
  • a full uni-assist application (member programmes that say “apply via uni-assist” are a different procedure)
  • proof that APS is done

You create a My assist account, select the exact university and programme, upload scans, pay the uni-assist fee structure (€75 first course of study per semester, €30 each additional — confirm checkout), then wait. Many files finish in about 4–8 weeks; peak intakes run longer. One VPD is often university- or programme-specific. Do not assume one PDF works for every campus.

Do I need both, one, or neither?

Read the programme admission page, not a Telegram screenshot.

  • APS + no VPD: Common. You apply direct or via a full uni-assist application, and the page never mentions VPD. You still do APS India if you are on the Indian credential path.
  • APS + VPD: The university wants a VPD upload and you still need APS as an Indian applicant. Two fees, two clocks. Start APS first if visa season is tight; start VPD as soon as the course is chosen if the deadline is close.
  • VPD only: Unusual for Indian school/Bachelor files. If a page truly says that, follow that page, not this article.
  • Neither: Some nationalities skip APS. Some programmes skip uni-assist and VPD (pure university portal). Indian applicants should still verify APS on aps-india.de.

Order of operations (so you do not miss an intake)

  1. Confirm the Bewerbungsweg on the course page: direct, uni-assist full application, and/or VPD.
  2. Start APS India as soon as transcripts are stable enough to courier. Peak season eats months.
  3. If the page says VPD, open My assist for that university/programme. Do not reuse a VPD from another school unless the instructions say you can.
  4. Keep name spellings identical across passport, APS, My assist, and CSP. Mismatches pause both files.
  5. Visa: CSP cares about APS, admission, finances (blocked account €11,904 for 12 months in 2026). Upload VPD only if your CSP document list asks. See CSP portal guide.

Winter-intake planning (illustrative): collect docs January–March, submit VPD March–May if required, keep 8–12 weeks before the university deadline. APS should already be in motion before that if you are Indian.

Frequent mix-ups

  • “I have APS, so I skip uni-assist.” False. APS is not a uni-assist application.
  • “I have VPD, so I skip APS.” False for typical Indian files.
  • “VPD is the visa blocked-account letter.” False. Finances are Sperrkonto / scholarship / Verpflichtungserklärung.
  • “One VPD for every TU.” Often false. Many VPDs are programme-specific.
  • Starting VPD in July for a mid-July NC deadline. The review clock will usually lose.

What to do this week

  1. Open each target programme PDF/portal. Search for VPD and Vorprüfungsdokumentation.
  2. If you are Indian, open the APS India guide and put courier + peak wait on a calendar.
  3. If any course requires VPD, follow the VPD guide and document scans.
  4. Estimate uni-assist fees with the application fee calculator. Track APS with APS processing time.
