How to Fill the Germany Student Visa CSP Portal: Step-by-Step Guide for Indian Students (2026)

Germany student visa CSP portal walkthrough for Indian students: every section, exact field values, document uploads, and common mistakes before VFS.

TL;DR: The Germany student visa CSP portal (Consular Services Portal at digital.diplo.de) is where Indian students submit their national visa (Category D) application online before booking VFS. Select the Study - APS process, complete the eligibility questionnaire (admission, language, blocked account, APS), then fill VIDEX and upload ten documents under Your documents. Once CSP clears your file, you book an in-person VFS slot in the same consular district. This guide walks through every section with exact values so you avoid silent rejections and wasted appointments.

How to Fill the Germany Student Visa CSP Portal: Step-by-Step Guide for Indian Students (2026)

Filling the Germany student visa CSP portal is the step most Indian students get stuck on. The form is long, some fields are confusing, and one wrong entry can cause delays at the VFS counter.

This guide walks through the Study - APS process on CSP: the eligibility questionnaire, every VIDEX field for a student national visa (Category D), and the Your documents upload checklist (10/10). For the full visa document set, start with Germany student visa requirements. For booking VFS after CSP, see the Germany student visa appointment guide. Use the visa timeline planner to space CSP, VFS, and your intake date.

Before you start: what you need ready

Do not open the CSP form without these in hand:

  • Valid Indian passport
  • University admission letter from your German university
  • Blocked account (Sperrkonto) confirmation from Expatrio, Fintiba, or Coracle
  • Health insurance certificates: travel insurance and statutory health insurance preliminary certificate
  • APS certificate from the German Embassy New Delhi
  • uni-assist evaluation report (VPD) if applicable
  • Academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Motivation letter (signed, English or German)
  • CV / Lebenslauf in tabular format (English or German)
  • Language certificate (IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught programmes, or German cert if required)
  • Parents' full details (name, date of birth, place of birth, place of residence)

Step 1: Create your CSP account and select Study - APS

Go to the Consular Service Portal and create an account. Use the exact same name as on your passport. Once logged in, start a new application and select:

  • Visa type: National visa (Category D)
  • Process: Study - APS (visa to complete a degree programme under Sections 16b and 17(2) of the German Residence Act)
  • Mission: The German consulate that covers your state of permanent residence in India

Indian students with school education completed in India use the Study - APS workflow. It adds an eligibility questionnaire before the VIDEX form and generates a tailored document list under Your documents.

Each consulate covers specific states. Always apply at the mission for your home state, not the state where your German university is located. See the Germany in India national visa page for consular districts.

Portal rules (shown on the Study - APS start page):

  • Most answers must be backed by documents (look for Supported by hints in the form).
  • After you submit the eligibility section, the full required document list appears under Your documents.
  • If an answer suggests you do not meet visa requirements, the portal flags it at that step.
  • Answer every question completely and truthfully. The mission checks your details and uploads before you book VFS.

When the eligibility section shows Requirements fulfilled and Entry form complete, proceed to the VIDEX application form and document uploads.

Step 2: Study - APS eligibility questionnaire

This section appears before the VIDEX fields (personal data, travel data, etc.). For a typical Indian Master's applicant with Zulassung, English-taught programme, blocked account, and APS, use the values below. Adjust if your case differs (preparatory course, scholarship, German-taught programme, PhD).

Degree programme

Question Typical answer (Master's with admission)
Have you already been admitted to a degree programme at a German university? Yes
Do you have a degree from a German school abroad or HZB obtained in Germany? No → select: I have another qualification that qualifies me to study
Are you allowed to start studying straight away once admitted? Yes (unless your admission requires a preparatory course first)
What kind of degree programme is it? I have been admitted to a full-time degree programme and can start straight away
Is it a doctorate with the aim of obtaining a PhD? No (for Master's; select Yes only for PhD admission)

Supported by: letter of admission from the university.

If your admission lists only non-preparatory conditions (e.g. submit final degree certificate before enrolment), you may still select that you can basically start straight away. If a preparatory programme (Studienkolleg, preparatory language course) is required, select No for starting straight away and follow the preparatory path.

Language skills

Question Typical answer (English-taught Master's)
Do you have level B2 German (ALTE, DSD, or DSH certificate)? No → I can prove the language skills required for my degree programme by other means
How will you provide proof? My language skills were tested by the university. I can prove this with the letter of admission (if admission states English proficiency), or I can prove the required knowledge by means of a language certificate (IELTS/TOEFL)

Supported by: admission letter, separate university confirmation, or language certificate.

For German-taught programmes, you usually need B2 German or higher with ALTE, DSD, or DSH proof unless the admission letter confirms an alternative.

Livelihood (finances)

Question Typical answer (self-funded)
Do you have a German or EU scholarship covering living expenses? No → I can prove that I can support myself in other ways
How will you secure your livelihood during your first year? I will secure my livelihood entirely through a blocked account, a Declaration of Commitment, other funding programmes or similar support

Supported by: blocked account confirmation, Declaration of Commitment, or scholarship letter.

The portal notes you must also enter financial means under Your application (VIDEX) (e.g. blocked account). See Step 11 in this guide. Amounts for the first year are listed on the CSP Studies and search for a place to study information page.

Tuition fees

Question Typical answer (public university)
Do you have to pay tuition fees in addition to semester fees? No (most public programmes; select Yes only if your admission lists tuition beyond semester fees)

Supported by: admission letter or additional university document showing fee amounts.

APS certificate

Question Typical answer (India)
Did you complete your school education in China, India, or Vietnam? Yes
Do you have an APS certificate? Yes

Supported by: APS certificate. More info: Akademische Prüfstelle (APS) | uni-assist.

Legal age

Question Typical answer
Are you of legal age at the time of application in the country in which you are applying? Yes (if under 18, you need a legal guardian's declaration of consent)

When all sections show complete and Requirements fulfilled, continue to Fill in the application form (VIDEX) and Upload all required supporting documents.

Step 3: Details of representation

Field Value
Who submits this application? I am the account holder and submit this visa application for myself

If you are filling the form yourself with no agent or lawyer, always select the first option. Leave everything else in this section blank.

Step 4: Applicant's personal data

Fill exactly as it appears on your passport. No abbreviations, no nicknames.

Field Value
Family name Exactly as on passport
Name at birth Leave blank unless your name changed after birth
First name(s) Exactly as on passport
Date of birth DD.MM.YYYY
Place of birth As on passport
Country of birth India
Sex As on passport
Marital status As applicable
Current nationality India

Step 5: Parents of the applicant

Fill from your passport address page or family documents. Both parents are required.

Field Value
Family name of father Father's surname
First name of father Father's given name
Nationality of father India
Father's date of birth DD.MM.YYYY
Father's place of birth City
Father's place of residence City

Other address information Building name if applicable
Postal code Your PIN code
Town/city Your city
Country India
Telephone/mobile number 91XXXXXXXXXX (no plus sign, no spaces)
Email Your email address
Residence in a country other than nationality? Leave unticked

Phone number format is the most common error on CSP. The portal only accepts specific characters and rejects spaces. Enter as 91 followed by your 10-digit number with no spaces and no plus sign. Example: 919876543210.

Step 7: Occupation

Field Value
Occupation learned Student, trainee
Current occupation (if different) Your current job title, or leave blank

If you are currently employed but going to Germany to study, keep Student, trainee as your learned occupation. It matches your visa purpose. If your current role is different, add it in the current occupation field.

Step 8: Identification papers

Fill directly from your passport bio page.

Field Value
Type of travel document Ordinary passport
Travel document number Exactly as on passport
Date of issue DD.MM.YYYY
Issuing state India
Valid until DD.MM.YYYY
Issued by Regional Passport Office or as printed on your passport
Issued in City of issue

Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your intended stay in Germany, plus some buffer. Renew it before applying if it expires within 2 years.

Step 9: Travel data and purpose

Field Value
Purpose of stay Study
Intended employment Leave blank
From (intended arrival) Your planned entry date into Germany
To End date covering your full programme duration
Stay no longer than 12 months? Do NOT tick this for a Master's

Do not tick the 12-month checkbox if you are doing a Master's or any programme longer than one year. Ticking it will contradict your application and cause problems.

For a 2-year Master's: set the To date approximately 2 years from your arrival date.

Step 10: Reference in Germany

Select Educational establishment/company/organisation.

Field Value
Name of establishment Your German university's full official name
Family name of contact Programme coordinator's last name
First name of contact Programme coordinator's first name
Street University street
House number University house number
Postal code University postal code
Town/city University city
Country Germany
Telephone University or department phone number
Email Programme advisor or admissions email

Get the contact person details from your admission letter or the university's official programme page. This is who the consulate may contact to verify your admission.

Step 11: Means of support and details of stay

Field Value
Means of support BLOCKED ACCOUNT
Formal declaration of commitment? No

A blocked account (Sperrkonto) with €11,904 is the standard financial proof for a Germany student visa in 2026. If you have a scholarship that covers living costs, you may instead mention the scholarship here.

Step 12: Intended place of stay

Field Value
Street Leave blank if no confirmed address yet
House number Leave blank
Postal code Your German university city postal code
Town/city Your German university city
How will you be accommodated? Tick the most relevant option (e.g. Single room for student dorm)
Permanent residence outside Germany? Yes
Which place of residence? INDIA
Family members accompanying? No, unless applicable
Health insurance for longer stay? Yes

If you have applied for student housing but do not yet have a confirmed address, enter the city postal code and leave the street blank. The consulate understands that international students book accommodation after arrival.

Step 13: Previous stays in Germany

Field Value
Ever been to Germany before? Tick Yes if you have, with details. Leave unticked if first time.

Always answer honestly. If you have visited on a tourist or Schengen visa, tick Yes and provide the details when prompted.

Step 14: Declaration

Field Value
Ever been convicted? No (unless applicable)
Expelled/deported/refused entry from Germany? No (unless applicable)
Suffering from listed diseases? No

All three are standard questions for every applicant. Answer honestly.

Step 15: Your documents (CSP upload checklist)

After VIDEX, open Your documents in the Study - APS process. CSP shows a progress counter (e.g. 10/10) and lists each required upload. Files must be PDF, JPG, or PNG, max 10 MB each.

This is the official CSP list for a typical admitted Indian Master's student. Your exact list may vary slightly based on eligibility answers.

Required documents (10 items)

# CSP document slot What to upload Portal notes
1 Passport Bio page with photo and personal details Issued within last 10 years; valid at least 3 months after planned entry (longer is better). At least 2 blank pages. If you are over 10, include the signature page if your passport has one.
2 Highest school-leaving qualification 12th marksheet / secondary school leaving certificate Proof of your highest school qualification.
3 APS certificate APS India certificate PDF Required because you completed school education in India.
4 Admission letter Zulassungsbescheid for a full-time degree programme Must match your eligibility answers (full-time, start date, university name).
5 Motivation letter Signed letter in English or German Explain why Germany, why this programme, and plans after graduation.
6 CV Tabular CV in English or German Summarise education, training, and experience up to the application date. See our CV guide.
7 Language proof IELTS/TOEFL (English-taught) or German certificate (German-taught) For German: often B2 ALTE, DSD, or DSH. For English: TOEFL or IELTS. Admission letter may suffice if it confirms language testing.
8 Financial proof Blocked account confirmation Must cover livelihood for the visa period shown on CSP. See Federal Foreign Office: blocked account.
9 Health insurance Incoming/travel insurance + statutory GKV preliminary certificate (typical student path) Valid from date of entry. Private cover for the full visa period must match statutory protection; travel-only insurance alone is often not enough for the full stay. See health insurance guide.
10 Optional documents India-specific embassy forms and extras Upload signed Declaration of True Information and Additional Contact Form here. Also use for degree certificates, transcripts, or VPD if not listed elsewhere.

Cross-check against the official student national visa checklist (India). Bring the same set in original + copy to VFS.

Upload tips:

  • One document per slot unless the portal allows multiples.
  • Use clear colour scans; no cut-off edges.
  • File names do not matter; content does.
  • Re-upload replaces the previous version (portal shows version date).

Documents not always in the CSP wizard (but still required for India)

Some India mission documents may not appear as separate CSP slots but are still needed at VFS or should go under Optional documents:

Document Notes
Bachelor's / Master's degree certificates Upload under Optional if no dedicated slot
Transcripts (all semesters) Upload under Optional if no dedicated slot
Declaration of True Information (signed) Required for India; upload under Optional
Additional Contact Form (signed) Required for India; upload under Optional
uni-assist VPD If applicable; upload under Optional

The two physical forms you must sign and upload

Two additional forms from the German Mission India website must be downloaded, filled, signed, and uploaded in the Optional documents slot on CSP. Most students miss these.

1. Declaration of True Information (Belehrung nach § 54)

This is a legal declaration that all information you have provided is accurate. Fill:

  • Place, date: Your city, date in DD.MM.YYYY
  • Sign on both the German and English signature lines

2. Additional Contact and Legal Representation Form

Fill your contact details at the top, then:

  • Tick: I agree to be contacted via email
  • Select: Option 1 (receive denial notification by email, faster than post)
  • Leave the representation section blank unless you have a lawyer or agent
  • Sign and date at the bottom

Both forms can be signed digitally. Upload them as PDFs.

Booking the VFS appointment after CSP

Once your CSP application is reviewed and cleared, you book a VFS appointment. Select the Germany Visa Application Centre in the city that covers your state of residence, not the Consulate General directly.

The difference:

  • Consulate General: processes the visa decision
  • Visa Application Centre (VFS): where you go in person to submit documents and biometrics

Book at the VFS Global India appointment page. Full booking rules, student categories, and fees are in our Germany student visa appointment guide.

Bring all uploaded documents in physical form (originals + copies), both signed forms, your passport, and payment for the VFS service fee on the day.

Processing time after VFS submission

National visa processing for Indian students typically takes several months after the VFS appointment. The consulate does not provide a fixed timeline. Plan your departure date with enough buffer.

Factors that slow processing:

  • Missing or unclear documents
  • Category mismatch
  • High seasonal volume before October and April intakes

Read Germany student visa rejection reasons before you submit so your CSP answers and uploads stay consistent at VFS.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Selecting the wrong CSP process (not Study - APS for Indian school credentials)
  • Eligibility answers that contradict your admission letter (e.g. "no admission" when you have Zulassung)
  • Entering phone number with spaces (CSP rejects it silently)
  • Ticking the 12-month stay checkbox for a multi-year programme
  • Leaving health insurance field unticked in VIDEX
  • Uploading motivation letter or CV in a language other than English or German
  • CV not in tabular format (portal asks for activities summarised in a table)
  • Not uploading the two signed India embassy forms under Optional documents
  • Uploading an unsigned motivation letter
  • Booking VFS under the wrong category or wrong consular district
  • Applying at the consulate covering your university city instead of your home state

Final checklist before CSP submission

  • Study - APS process selected for correct mission (home state)
  • Eligibility questionnaire complete; Requirements fulfilled shown
  • All personal details in VIDEX match passport exactly
  • Phone number entered without spaces (91XXXXXXXXXX format)
  • Purpose of stay: Study
  • Stay duration covers full programme length
  • 12-month checkbox NOT ticked for programmes over 1 year
  • Means of support: Blocked Account (VIDEX + eligibility answers aligned)
  • Health insurance: Yes
  • Permanent residence outside Germany: Yes, India
  • Your documents shows 10/10 (or all required slots green)
  • Motivation letter and CV in English or German, signed where needed
  • Both India embassy forms signed and uploaded under Optional documents
  • Correct VFS location selected for your home state
