Best Bank Account for International Students Germany (2026)

Best bank account for international students Germany: N26 ID rules, bunq, Deutsche Bank, HVB, DKB, Revolut, and PayPal. Checked 26 Oct 2026.

TL;DR: The best bank account for international students in Germany is the one that will accept your ID, then pay rent and insurance. N26's May 2026 list does not accept an Indian, Chinese, or Vietnamese passport, or a visa sticker in the passport. A German residence-permit card can work. bunq accepts those passports and can issue a German IBAN. Expatrio customers already have a UniCredit account (formerly Aion Bank). That is not HypoVereinsbank. Deutsche Bank's Junge Konto is free through age 30. Commerzbank says foreign students cannot open StartKonto right now. PayPal is e-money, not a Girokonto. Fees below were checked on 26 October 2026.

Best Bank Account for International Students Germany (2026)

The best bank account for international students Germany is a Girokonto the bank will actually open for your passport or residence card. A referral code does not fix a rejected ID. N26 vs Sparkasse for students in Germany

N26 vs Sparkasse students Germany comes down to the app versus a counter that takes cash.

N26 Standard is a German bank account: €0 a month, no student age cutoff, a free virtual Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and two free eurozone ATM withdrawals a month. A physical card is €10. Card payments abroad have no foreign-transaction fee on N26's own pricing page. Cash withdrawals outside the eurozone on Standard are 1.7%. There is no branch and no cash deposit.

The ID list decides whether N26 will open at all. On the May 2026 list for people living in Germany:

Nationality Passport What N26 lists
India, China, Vietnam Not accepted German residence-permit card, valid at least one year
United States, United Kingdom Accepted Passport

Since November 2021 N26 does not accept the residence-permit sticker in the passport. Many students only have that sticker until the Ausländerbehörde issues the card. Guides that say "Indian passport, open N26 on day one" are behind that PDF. Read your own row before you book a video-Ident. The file changes.

Sparkasse is a different bank in every city. Many student accounts are €0 with an enrolment certificate, a Girocard, and a counter that takes cash. Read that city's Preisaushang. Do not copy Berlin's fee onto Munich. Sparkasse is the cash account. N26 is the English app, when the ID list says yes.

Girocard vs N26 students: Germany still has bakeries, canteens, and small shops that take cash or Girocard and refuse a Mastercard. N26 does not issue a Girocard. If your week looks like cash and a campus canteen, keep a branch account (HVB, Deutsche Bank, or Sparkasse) beside the app, or plan ATM withdrawals inside N26's free limit.

bunq when the passport is the problem

bunq accepts a published list of non-EU passports, including India, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brazil, the US, and the UK. If your country is not on that list, bunq asks for a European passport or a European residence-permit card. Nigeria and Pakistan are not on the passport list they published for this check.

Sign-up from Germany gets a DE IBAN on every plan, including Free. The licence is Dutch, so deposit protection is the Dutch scheme, up to €100,000.

University students in Germany aged 18 to 26 can get bunq Pro (normally €9.99 a month) free after bunq accepts an Immatrikulationsbescheinigung or student ID. The discount starts on the first day of the next calendar month. Until then, stay on Free if you do not want a charge. Details: bunq, free for students.

You need a German number for a lot of app banking after Anmeldung. SIM steps: prepaid SIM and payments.

Two banks called UniCredit

Students hear "UniCredit" and walk into HypoVereinsbank. Those are different companies.

HypoVereinsbank Expatrio's bank
Legal name UniCredit Bank GmbH UniCredit NV/SA, German branch, formerly Aion Bank
Where it lives HVB branches and the HVB app The Expatrio app
BIC people see on transfers HVB's own BMPBDEF2
Deposit protection German scheme Belgian scheme, up to €100,000
How you get it You apply Included with an Expatrio blocked account

Expatrio's November 2025 note says the rename does not change the account and that you do not need to do anything. The account is a German IBAN with a digital Mastercard and an optional physical card. Connecting it needs a German mobile number. Monthly Sperrkonto payouts can land there automatically, so Expatrio customers do not have to open a second bank just to receive the €992.

You cannot pay a cash Kaution into that account at an HVB teller.

HVB StartKonto

The HypoVereinsbank StartKonto international students find online is the under-26 account, not a separate foreign-student product. HVB StartKonto, price list dated 1 October 2026:

  • €0 until your 26th birthday. No enrolment letter. Useful in the gap before Immatrikulation, and also if you are not a student.
  • On that birthday the account becomes HVB AktivKonto at €4.90 a month. The IBAN stays.
  • Online SEPA transfers and standing orders are included. A paper transfer is €0.90.
  • The UniCredit debit card is €0 if you open online. Apple Pay and Google Pay work with it.
  • A girocard is €12 a year.
  • The free HVB Mastercard needs €500 a month coming in (family support, a job, or BAföG-style income). A refused card means you do not get that card.
  • Cash withdrawal in Germany with the UniCredit card is free from HVB's side. The ATM operator can still add a fee. Cash deposits are at HVB machines and the counter.
  • Abroad, HVB does not add its own withdrawal fee. The other bank can still charge for the cash and the conversion.
  • Adults use video-Ident or PostIdent.

HVB's public page does not ban foreign students. Commerzbank's page does. The ID check can still say no. If it does, HVB's Basiskonto (BasisKonto Plus) is €7.90 a month.

Deutsche Bank's free young account runs through age 30. HVB's stops at 26. A 27-year-old master's student should not pick HVB for the €0 headline.

Deutsche Bank Junge Konto

Das Junge Konto is the everyday account, not a blocked account.

  • €0 a month for pupils, apprentices, students, and voluntary-service years through age 30, with a registered address in the EU. Anmeldung is that address.
  • If you stop qualifying, it becomes AktivKonto at €6.90 a month (Deutsche Bank price board, October 2026).
  • A Deutsche Bank debit card with Mastercard function is included.
  • Free cash at Deutsche Bank and Cash Group machines (Deutsche Bank, Postbank, Commerzbank, HypoVereinsbank).
  • Card payments in a foreign currency: 1%, minimum €1.50.
  • A paper transfer is €1.50.
  • Adults can use video-Ident or PostIdent. Bring a passport and proof you are studying.

This is the branch account that still fits international students who want a counter. The €30 "Kunden empfehlen Kunden" payment goes to the existing customer, needs at least €500 in within 8 weeks, and excludes blocked accounts.

N26 vs Commerzbank student account

Commerzbank advertises a free StartKonto through age 27, a Girocard, a Young Visa, and a €50 start credit. The same page says foreign students cannot open a StartKonto right now. The €50 also needs marketing email and calls left on, plus three months of activity. Skip the brand until that FAQ changes.

If a classmate got Commerzbank last year, their approval is not yours.

DKB, ING, and C24

A DKB account international students add once money arrives every month (student account) is €0 under 28, or with €700 a month coming in. Otherwise €4.50. Worldwide free Visa payments and worldwide ATM withdrawals sit on Aktivstatus, which is the €700 rule. Under 28 with no €700, the monthly fee is €0 and free card use stays in the eurozone. New customers can get Aktivstatus for the first 3 months. DKB is a strong second account once a salary or the blocked-account payout is landing every month. It is a slower first account than bunq, and an empty SCHUFA file can mean a no.

ING (conditions dated 1 June 2026): €0 under 28, or with €1,000 a month in. Otherwise €4.90. Visa debit is included. Girocard is optional at €1.49 a month. Free Visa withdrawals from €50 at most German ATMs. The account terms also say you live and work in Germany and have regular income. A new student with no job can be refused even though the student page looks open. The €50 Kunden-werben-Kunden credit goes to the existing ING customer, not automatically to you.

C24 Smart: €0 with no age cap and no minimum incoming. Mastercard and girocard included. Four free ATM withdrawals a month, including outside Germany. The app is German. This is the clean option when the under-26 or under-28 free period is already over. C24 still expects a German onboarding, so it comes after Anmeldung.

Revolut

Use a Revolut German IBAN students can read in the app. Revolut's German-branch Standard fees apply from 15 October 2026 when you live in Germany and that IBAN starts with DE. You are then a customer of Revolut Bank UAB, German branch. Older accounts can still sit on an LT IBAN until you accept the migration email. Give payroll and a landlord the IBAN only after it starts with DE.

Standard is €0. The first card is free to issue. Standard delivery is €7.99. ATM withdrawals: 5 times or €200 a month, whichever comes first, then 2% or €1, whichever is higher. Weekday currency exchange is free up to €1,000 a month. Weekend exchange is 1%. There is no Girocard and no cash deposit. Revolut says it cannot offer a Basiskonto because German law requires cash deposits on that product. The banking licence is Lithuanian, so deposit protection is the Lithuanian scheme, up to €100,000.

Use Revolut for travel and for money in other currencies. Keep rent and TK or AOK on the Girokonto.

PayPal

PayPal vs Girokonto Germany splits into two products. PayPal's German terms call the account e-money. The balance is not a bank deposit and is not covered by a national deposit guarantee. Opening it is free.

After the Girokonto exists, PayPal is the right tool for Kleinanzeigen, eBay, and splitting a shop receipt. Pay a private seller with Goods and Services if you want buyer protection. A landlord or a listing that demands the deposit by Friends and Family is asking you to switch that protection off. Housing deposits belong in the contract path in the WG viewing guide, not in a PayPal message.

PayPal's fee table: moving euros to a linked local bank account is free when no currency conversion is involved. A withdrawal onto a card is 1% (euro minimum €0.25, maximum €10). A withdrawal to a US bank account is 3%. The name on PayPal has to match the name on the bank account. A PayPal payment is also not the card purchase an N26 referral bonus is waiting for. Confirm the qualifying payment in the N26 app.

Referral bonuses

Pick the bank first. Then take the bonus if that bank is paying one. YourWeg does not have a bank referral code. Do not put a stranger's WhatsApp code into an application.

Offer Who gets paid Catch
N26 invite The existing customer. The amount is personal and only shows in their app. Cap €1,500. Payout can take 60 days You must open via their link and make a transaction larger than the bonus. N26 says referral income above €256 in a calendar year is taxable
Revolut invite The existing customer, and only if Revolut invited them into that promotion The euro amount is in the app and changes. No public "€20 for everyone"
bunq invite Both sides, as a perk the app lists (interest, a card, a plan discount) Not a fixed cash amount
Deutsche Bank, €30 The existing customer At least €500 in within 8 weeks. Blocked accounts are excluded
Commerzbank €50 The new customer, if they qualify Foreign students are currently told they cannot open StartKonto. Marketing consent is part of the €50
DKB €90 The new customer Apply 19 Oct to 3 Nov 2026, order the Visa credit card in the same application, leave email marketing on, and receive €1,500 by 31 Dec 2026. Paid 15 Jan 2027. The €1,500 does not replace the €700-a-month rule. A refused credit card means no €90
DKB 1% cashback The cardholder, cap €15, through 19 Nov 2026 Opt in inside the app. Do not open DKB for €15
C24 friend invite The existing customer gets €70 You open the account and make three card payments totalling €30. You are not the one being paid €70
ING, €50 The existing customer, or UNICEF You are not promised €50
Expatrio Referrer €10, friend €15 Code entered before you submit a Value Package. Both the blocked account and the health insurance must be activated
Fintiba Referrer €10, friend €15, as a prepaid-card email Fintiba Plus only, and you do not cancel the insurance inside 14 days

The DKB €90 window closes 3 November 2026. Treat any "2026 bonus" screenshot older than the bank's own page as expired.

C24 partner vouchers that promise €75 usually require you to close an existing German Girokonto through a CHECK24 account move. A first account after arrival has nothing to close. C24's voucher terms also forbid republishing those codes, so this article does not carry one.

If every application says no

People legally resident in the EU can ask for a Basiskonto under the Zahlungskontengesetz. It is a basic payment account: IBAN, transfers, direct debit, cash. It is not free at every bank. Deutsche Bank lists its Basiskonto at €6.90 a month. HVB's BasisKonto Plus is €7.90. Revolut says it cannot offer one, because it does not take cash deposits.

Apply at a branch bank, keep the rejection emails, and ask for the Basiskonto in writing if the normal product is refused. An empty SCHUFA file is not a reason to skip this. The SCHUFA guide explains the difference between an empty file and a negative entry.

Mistakes that cost a month

  • Waiting for the perfect brand while rent is due.
  • Opening N26 on an Indian, Chinese, or Vietnamese passport because a 2024 blog said yes.
  • Treating Expatrio's UniCredit IBAN and an HVB branch as the same counter.
  • Giving HR or a landlord a Revolut IBAN that still starts with LT.
  • Using PayPal as the only account.
  • Closing the only working IBAN before the new one has paid out once.
  • A name that does not match the passport. Banks and PayPal both stall on that.
  • Turning off marketing email before a bonus that required the consent is paid.

Salary setup, once the IBAN exists: Steuer-ID and the Werkstudent payslip. The order of the first month is in first 30 days.

Bottom line

Match the document in your hand to a bank that will take it. bunq or an existing Expatrio account covers week one for most Indian, Chinese, and Vietnamese passports. N26 covers passports on its current list. Deutsche Bank or HVB covers the branch, the Girocard, and cash, inside their age rules. DKB and C24 are the later free accounts. Revolut and PayPal sit beside the Girokonto. A €15 or €90 code never outranks a rejected application.
