Open a German Bank Account (Girokonto) After Anmeldung: Student Guide

How to open a Girokonto in Germany as an international student after Anmeldung: documents, N26 vs Sparkasse, SCHUFA, Steuer-ID, and Sperrkonto payouts.

TL;DR: To open a German bank account as an international student you usually need a Meldebescheinigung from Anmeldung, passport, and student status or admission papers. A Girokonto is your everyday current account for rent, salary, and insurance. Online banks (for example N26) can be faster; Sparkasse and Volksbank branches still matter for some landlords and employers. After Anmeldung you also receive a Steuer-ID by post. Point your Sperrkonto monthly release to the new IBAN. Do not wait weeks: bank access unlocks almost every other first-month task.

Open a German Bank Account (Girokonto) After Anmeldung: Student Guide

Open German bank account students need after landing is a Girokonto: a normal current account with an IBAN. Without it, rent standing orders, public insurance SEPA, and Sperrkonto monthly releases get stuck.

This sits in week 2 of the first 30 days right after Anmeldung.

What a Girokonto is (and is not)

Account Purpose
Girokonto Everyday spending, salary, rent, insurance
Sperrkonto Visa blocked funds; monthly drip after unlock
Depot Investments (not needed in month one)

Official living admin overview: Make it in Germany: administrative steps. Official bank account overview: Make it in Germany: bank account.

Documents banks usually ask for

  1. Passport (and residence permit / visa sticker when issued)
  2. Meldebescheinigung from Anmeldung
  3. Student proof (Immatrikulationsbescheinigung or Zulassung while enrolment is pending)
  4. German mobile number for SMS login
  5. Steuer-ID when the letter arrives (you can often open first, then update)

Banks reject blurry scans. Use the same name spelling as your passport.

Online bank vs branch bank

Online / neo banks (e.g. N26, similar apps): fast video-Ident, English apps, good for week one. Watch cash deposit limits and whether your landlord accepts the IBAN.

Sparkasse / Volksbank / big retail banks: branch appointments, German paperwork, sometimes student free accounts. Useful when employers or Wohnungsgesellschaften are picky.

Many international students open an app account immediately, then add a local bank once they have a long-term address.

SCHUFA and first accounts

Germany uses SCHUFA credit data. Newcomers often have little history. That can mean:

  • prepaid or basic account products first
  • deposit or monthly fees on some products
  • soft checks that feel random

Pay rent and phone on time for six months and your options widen. Do not ignore unpaid phone contracts; they feed SCHUFA.

Connect Sperrkonto, salary, and insurance

  1. After enrolment, send the matriculation certificate to your blocked-account provider.
  2. Set the payout IBAN to your new Girokonto.
  3. Give the same IBAN to TK/AOK (TK vs AOK) for SEPA.
  4. When you start a Werkstudent job, HR needs IBAN + Steuer-ID (payslip guide).

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for the perfect bank while rent is due in cash
  • Opening an account in a name that does not match the passport
  • Forgetting to update the Sperrkonto payout IBAN
  • Closing the only German account before a new one is active

Bottom line

Anmeldung unlocks the Meldebescheinigung; the Meldebescheinigung unlocks a real Girokonto; the Girokonto unlocks rent, insurance, and salary. Treat banking as infrastructure, not a brand loyalty contest.
