Send Money to Germany from India Students (2026)

Send money to Germany from India students: fund a Sperrkonto from the provider PDF, then top up a Girokonto. LRS, Form A2, TCS. Checked 27 Oct 2026.

TL;DR: To send money to Germany from India, students fund the blocked account with the euro total on the provider payment screen, including fees and the buffer. Only euros that arrive count toward €11,904. Expatrio and Fintiba both offer Flywire inside the dashboard. Fintiba also offers a SWIFT path. Expatrio's help still documents an India domestic transfer that needs Form A2 and TCS. A later rent top-up goes to your own Girokonto, where Wise can compete. Remitly does not send money out of India. India's LRS ceiling is USD 250,000 per resident per financial year. Checked 27 October 2026.

Send Money to Germany from India Students (2026)

Send money to Germany from India students: the first payment funds the blocked account, and a later payment tops up your own German IBAN. The two payments are not the same job. Fees and tax rules below were checked on 27 October 2026. The rupee rate on your screen that morning is the one that counts.

Provider setup fees are compared in Expatrio vs Fintiba vs Coracle. This page is the transfer.

Two different payments

Payment Who receives it What "cheap" means
Sperrkonto funding The beneficiary, IBAN, and reference on that provider's payment screen The full euro total arrives, with a reference they can match
Later top-up Your Girokonto, name spelled as on the passport The fewest rupees debited for the euros you wanted a parent to send

The blocked amount for a 12-month student visa in 2026 is €11,904 (€992 a month). Expatrio and Fintiba also charge setup, a monthly fee, and a buffer. Illustrative totals on the comparison page, from July 2026 fee sheets, are about €12,231 (Expatrio) and €12,282 (Fintiba). Re-read the live checkout. The PDF total is what you send. A shortfall is a common visa rejection cause, because the embassy sees the balance that arrived.

Use the blocked account calculator for the official blocked figure and the currency converter to turn that euro total into a rough rupee range. Then price the same euro figure on each rail the provider allows, on the same day. This article does not publish a live INR quote.

Sperrkonto transfer from India

Open the provider account first. Wait until the payment screen, or the account-opening PDF, shows the amount, the beneficiary, and the reference. Copy them. Do not reuse bank details from a friend's transfer or from a screenshot in a WhatsApp group.

Expatrio. In the user portal, Blocked Account, then My Payments, then Initiate payment. You choose the country the money leaves from, then the amount (the full total, or a part). Flywire is the partner they tell you to pick for a local-currency payment. The transfer has to leave a bank in the country you selected. Their help centre still lists a separate India article, "Domestic transfer from India Guide - The A2 form and the TCS", for an INR domestic option, and a separate note for when a bank rejects the SWIFT code on the account-opening PDF. So the India screen can show more than one method. Use the methods on your screen. The help index is here: Transferring the blocked amount.

Fintiba. The student funding guide (updated 17 September 2026) has two paths. Flywire is inside the account: confirm the amount, say who is paying, then complete the payment on Flywire. A separate path is an international bank transfer (SWIFT). Send it in EUR, with the reference exactly as printed. India payers on Flywire are asked for PAN, source of funds, the foreign-exchange limit, and a declaration amount.

Path Timing Fintiba publishes What you must match
Flywire card or online Blocking confirmation can be issued as soon as the payment completes The Flywire checkout
Flywire bank transfer 2 to 5 business days Exact amount and the reference on the instruction
SWIFT 3 to 10 business days EUR, the transfer document, the reference

Fintiba's status labels for Flywire run Registered, Sent, Received. Received means the money is on the blocked account. The blocking confirmation can still take a little longer to appear. SWIFT is not trackable the same way. If the instruction expires or the payment is cancelled before money moves, start again. The rate can change.

Wise vs bank transfer for a blocked account

A Wise vs bank transfer blocked account comparison only counts if that provider's screen offers both. A cheaper app that pays the wrong name does not speed up Sperrbestätigung.

Rail Beneficiary Reference Who can take a cut Tracking
Flywire inside Expatrio or Fintiba The details on that Payment ID. India bank details change per payment. Do not reuse the last one Flywire Payment ID Flywire's rate is in the quote before you pay. One active India Payment ID per PAN Tracking link in the provider account
SWIFT in EUR from an Indian bank The name, IBAN, and BIC on the provider PDF The reference on that PDF A correspondent bank can deduct from the euros unless your bank charges you instead Your bank's outward reference. Slow to see on the provider side
Wise, India to a German IBAN Full name and IBAN Whatever the provider told you to put in the reference field, if this rail is allowed Wise shows the fee and the euros the recipient gets before you pay Wise's own tracker
Remitly Not a plan for this transfer

Wise publishes an India-to-Germany page: you pay in INR by card or from your bank, and the recipient gets EUR. Once Wise has converted the money, arrival is usually 1 to 2 working days, and conversion itself can take up to 2 working days. The estimate is shown before you confirm: Wise, send money to Germany. Use it for a later top-up to your own IBAN, or for the blocked account only when the provider has given you a beneficiary that accepts that kind of transfer. Wise from India is still a resident's outward remittance. PAN and the purpose still apply.

Your bank's SWIFT is the path Fintiba documents beside Flywire, and the path Expatrio's SWIFT-code help article still assumes. Send euros, not a rupee amount aimed at a EUR IBAN. Ask the branch to take its own charges from your rupee balance (the option often labelled OUR), so the blocked account is not short by a correspondent fee. Put the provider reference in the field the form actually sends. A note in the wrong box is the same as no note.

Remitly is not the comparison here. Wise's India comparison states that Remitly does not support international transfers out of India. If a Remitly screen ever offers Germany from an Indian account, treat it as a top-up experiment, not as Sperrkonto instructions.

Flywire Germany student payments from India have their own rules on Flywire's India bank-transfer page:

  • Do not reuse the Indian account details from a previous Flywire payment. Details can change with the amount and the local processor.
  • Do not split several bank transfers into one Payment ID. TCS is why they block that.
  • One active Payment ID per PAN. The first INR payment has to be fully delivered before a second Payment ID under the same PAN.
  • An immediate family member can open their own request with their own PAN and their own account.
  • If the method needs an LRS declaration, the bank details stay hidden until you submit the form on the tracking page.
  • After your bank debits you, Flywire says 1 to 3 business days before the status moves, because the money is going to their local account in India first.

A PayPal button inside that Flywire checkout is Flywire's method. A personal PayPal transfer to a person is not. PayPal as a wallet, and which German account to hold, is the bank comparison.

Work out the blocked account, then keep the timeline

The 2026 student visa figure is €11,904. Calculate yours, then save the plan on your checklist.

How to compare the rate without a stale screenshot

  1. Write down the euro total on today's provider screen.
  2. On each allowed rail, enter that same euro amount.
  3. Record rupees that will leave the Indian account, euros the provider is guaranteed to receive, and the time they quote.
  4. Pick the lowest rupee debit among rails that still pay the right beneficiary with the right reference.

FX moves during the day. A blog that says one app is ₹20,000 cheaper was true for one screenshot.

LRS blocked account India

The outward payment is under the Reserve Bank of India's Liberalised Remittance Scheme. The Master Direction on LRS says:

  • A resident individual may remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year, April to March. Companies, partnership firms, HUFs, and trusts are not on this scheme.
  • The limit includes studies abroad.
  • Authorised dealers may release up to that USD 250,000 for studies without a cost estimate from the university. Above the ceiling, they may allow more when the institution abroad has issued an estimate.
  • The remitter provides Form A2. For a minor, the natural guardian countersigns it.
  • PAN is mandatory for an LRS remittance.

€11,904, and the roughly €12,300 transfer with fees, sits under USD 250,000 for a single resident. The ceiling binds when the same PAN has already sent large sums that year, or when tuition is added on top for an expensive programme. Each payer has their own ceiling.

Form A2 studies abroad is the declaration your bank or the payment partner files with the purpose. Expatrio's India domestic guide exists because an INR transfer needs that form and triggers TCS. Fintiba and Flywire collect the same facts on their India step: PAN, source of funds, and the limit. Fill the purpose as studies, not as a gift and not as a holiday. A wrong purpose can put you on the higher TCS row.

TCS

TCS is tax your authorised dealer collects and you claim as a credit in the income-tax return. It is not a fee the German bank keeps, and the dealer does not refund it if you later cancel the transfer.

What major Indian banks published for remittances from 1 April 2026 (HDFC's notice):

Education remittance TCS
Funded by a loan from a specified financial institution Nil
Any other education remittance, up to ₹10 lakh in the financial year Nil
Any other education remittance, above ₹10 lakh 2% on the amount above ₹10 lakh
Same education remittance with an inoperative PAN (Aadhaar not linked) HDFC's table shows 5% above ₹10 lakh

The ₹10 lakh line is per PAN, per financial year, across every LRS purpose, every bank, and every payment app. A gift sent in June counts toward the same tally as the blocked account in October. The Income Tax Department's TCS note also treats a remittance for education from a qualifying education loan as outside this collection.

Your debit advice is the figure that was applied. If the purpose was entered as "other" rather than education, the rate above ₹10 lakh can be 20%. That is a form error, not a Germany rule.

Flywire will not let one PAN run two Payment IDs at once, which is their way of calculating TCS. A parent who pays with their own PAN is a second remitter, with their own LRS usage and their own ₹10 lakh tally. Fintiba asks you to declare that payer before the transfer starts.

After you have a German IBAN

Monthly Sperrkonto payouts are the provider's job once the account is activated in Germany. Money parents send on top of that, for a deposit or a city where €992 does not cover rent, goes to the Girokonto in your passport name. That is the transfer where Wise and a normal EUR wire are allowed to compete, because you are the beneficiary and you chose the account. Open the account using the bank comparison, then send to that IBAN.

The name on the Wise recipient and the name on the German account have to match. A transfer from a parent's Wise profile into an account titled in your name can stall when the German bank checks the sender line. Use the parent's bank or Wise profile and put your IBAN as the recipient, with your name as the account holder.

Mistakes

  • Sending the blocked €11,904 and forgetting setup, monthly fees, and the buffer, then wondering why Sperrbestätigung does not issue.
  • Letting the sending bank deduct correspondent fees from the euro amount.
  • Reusing a Flywire India account number from a previous Payment ID.
  • Splitting one Flywire Payment ID into several NEFT or RTGS transfers.
  • Typing the reference into a remarks box the SWIFT message drops.
  • Paying a person on PayPal because a forum said it was faster.
  • Using a friend's Wise account in a third person's name.
  • Booking the visa appointment before the provider balance shows the full total.

Bottom line

For the blocked account, send the euro total on today's Expatrio or Fintiba screen, on a rail that screen lists, with the reference it prints. From India that is usually Flywire, sometimes a EUR SWIFT, and for Expatrio an INR domestic option that needs Form A2. For money after arrival, shop Wise against your bank on the way to your own IBAN. The LRS ceiling is USD 250,000 per person per year. TCS above ₹10 lakh is a tax credit, and the purpose on Form A2 decides the rate.
