Winter Semester Start in Germany for International Students (2026/27)

The winter semester start Germany international students plan around is not the day of the first lecture. Germany runs the semester on one clock and teaching on another. If you only watch the lecture date, you enrol late, miss exam registration, or treat February as a holiday while the semester is still open.

Semesterbeginn vs Vorlesungsbeginn

Semesterbeginn vs Vorlesungsbeginn is the split that causes the first wrong email to the international office.

The semester (Semesterzeit) is the administrative half-year:

• Winter: 1 October to 31 March
• Summer: 1 April to 30 September

That window is what enrolment, the semester contribution, and student status refer to. It is shared across German higher education. It is not the day your first seminar meets.

The lecture period (Vorlesungszeit) is shorter, about 14 to 15 weeks, and the university sets it. For winter 2026/27, many calendars open lectures on 12 October 2026. That is a pattern, not a statute. Two published examples:

Lecture end dates already differ by a day in that pair. Other universities move the start by a week. Read your Semesterzeiten or academic calendar. Do not copy a friend's campus.

Public holidays inside the lecture period cancel classes in that state. They do not move the semester end.

Orientierungswoche Germany

Orientierungswoche Germany (also Studieneinführungswoche, O-Woche, or Ersti-Woche) is the introduction, usually before Vorlesungsbeginn. Departments use it for campus logins, library registration, timetable building, and a first meeting with the Fachschaft (the subject student group).

It does not put you on the student register. Paying nothing and attending every tour still leaves you unenrolled.

Treat these as separate tasks:

Some lab, teaching, or regulated programmes mark parts of the introduction as Pflicht. Missing a compulsory safety or intro session can block a module even when enrolment is complete. The email from your faculty outweighs a general "orientation is optional" rumour.

Portals differ by university (HISinOne, CampusNet, Paul, AlmaWeb, Moodle, and others). The product name does not change the order: enrol, then get the IT identity, then book courses, then register for exams.

What has to be true before the first lecture

Showing up to a lecture without enrolment does not create student status.

1. Accept the offer by the date on the Zulassungsbescheid.
2. Pay the semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) with the reference on your invoice. This is not tuition. The transport share alone is often the Deutschlandsemesterticket slice (about €37.80 a month from winter 2026/27 where that contract applies). The total on the invoice is the number that matters. 3. Submit the health-insurance certificate the university asked for. Travel insurance from the visa file does not enrol you. See TK vs AOK.
4. Download the matriculation certificate for this semester. The Ausländerbehörde and the blocked-account payout both ask for it. Sequence: residence permit after arrival and blocked account.
5. Keep Anmeldung on its own clock. Address registration is due shortly after you move in, commonly within 14 days, under the Federal Registration Act. Semester start does not pause it. Guide: Anmeldung.

If the visa or flight lands after the enrolment date on your letter, email the international office before that date and ask for a written extension. Do not assume the seat survives silence.

Rückmeldung Semesterbeitrag Germany

Rückmeldung Semesterbeitrag Germany is re-registration for a semester you are already in, not the first enrolment.

You pay the semester contribution again inside a window the university publishes. For winter, that window often closes in June or July of the same year, before 1 October. For summer, it often closes in January or February. Examples differ: FU Berlin set winter 2026/27 re-registration to 17 July 2026, and summer 2027 re-registration to 12 February 2027. Giessen's winter window was 15 June to 31 July 2026, with a late fee if you miss it. Those fees and dates are local. Yours are on the registrar's page.

Miss Rückmeldung and the university can exmatriculate you (Exmatrikulation). A late fee (Säumnisgebühr) is sometimes offered and sometimes not. Being "still in Germany" or "still attending class" does not replace the payment.

New students ignore Rückmeldung for the intake they just joined. They follow the deadline on the admission letter. They meet Rückmeldung the next semester.

Leave of absence is not a visa status

Beurlaubung is leave from studies while the university still lists you, under its own rules. First-semester leave is often refused. A granted leave usually means you do not take courses, and the semester ticket may not be issued. Deadlines fall early: FU Berlin's winter 2026/27 leave requests ran to 23 November 2026. Again, that date is one university.

Leave does not rewrite a student residence permit. If you will not actually study, tell the Ausländerbehörde before you pause. Do not treat a university PDF as permission to stay without studying.

Exam registration German university

Exam registration German university offices do not assume that enrolment or course attendance equals a grade.

At most universities you must register for the exam (Prüfungsanmeldung) inside a window, often after teaching has started. Miss it and you can sit in every class and still have no attempt on the record. Withdrawal rules (what counts as a failed try, when a doctor's note is required) live in the examination regulations (Prüfungsordnung) for your cohort, not in the newest PDF if the degree changed.

Practical order in the first three weeks:

1. Build a timetable from the Vorlesungsverzeichnis.
2. Book modules if your programme uses a Belegungsfrist.
3. Write down the exam-registration open and close dates from the Prüfungsamt or portal.
4. Go to the first session. Rooms change. The portal beats the orientation handout.

Vorlesungsfreie Zeit exams Germany

Vorlesungsfreie Zeit exams Germany students call "semester break" is the stretch with no regular weekly classes. It is not empty.

Winter lectures often stop in early or mid-February. The semester still ends on 31 March. Between those dates, faculties schedule Klausuren, block courses, lab practicals, and Hausarbeit deadlines. The Christmas interruption (often from around 21 December into early January) pauses weekly classes. It does not end the semester, and some programmes set papers across it.

Plan travel against the exam calendar, not the last lecture. A flight booked for "when classes stop" is how people miss a first attempt.

You remain a student until exmatriculation or the end of your enrolment, not until the last seminar.

Summer semester start Germany

Summer semester start Germany uses the same two clocks:

If winter 2026/27 is no longer open for you, summer 2027 is the next start. The application work happens in autumn 2026, not in March. The intake planner has the backward timeline.

Arrival tasks do not change because the month is April: enrolment, insurance certificate, matriculation certificate, address registration, residence permit.

Common mistakes

• Waiting for the first lecture to pay the semester contribution
• Treating orientation as enrolment
• Assuming course attendance registered you for the exam
• Booking a February flight because "the semester is over"
• Buying a second public Deutschlandticket when the semester contribution already includes a Deutschlandsemesterticket
• Emailing the international office after the enrolment deadline with no earlier written request
