Germany University Intake Deadlines: Winter and Summer 2026/27 Planner
Germany university intake deadlines for Winter 2026/27 and Summer 2027. Uni-assist July 15 rule, country bottlenecks, and month-by-month timeline.
Germany university intake deadlines look simple on paper: 15 July for Winter, 15 January for Summer. In real life, the bottleneck is often APS, uni-assist queues, or VPD processing, not the date on the website.
If you are from India, China, Vietnam, or Mongolia, July 15 is not your safe date. Plan backward from October (or April) with buffer.
TL;DR
- Winter intake: lectures ~October, uni-assist cutoff often 15 July
- Summer intake: lectures ~April, uni-assist cutoff often 15 January
- APS countries: target May for Winter uni-assist submission, not July
- Top universities (RWTH, Stuttgart, FU Berlin) often close in May
- Start the full chain 8 to 12 months before intake
The two intakes, simply
| Intake | Lectures start | Typical uni-assist deadline | Safer submit window |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | October | 15 July | April to May |
| Summer | April | 15 January | October to November |
Always open the programme page, not just the university homepage. Deadlines differ by course.
What students get wrong about deadlines
- "I have until July 15, so I'll start in June."
Uni-assist review can take 4 to 8+ weeks in peak season. June submissions risk missing Winter. - "All universities use the same date."
They do not. RWTH Aachen, Stuttgart, and others often close in May. - "I'll do APS after admission."
For many APS countries, APS should run in parallel with applications, not after. - "Deadline passed, I'll try next year."
Sometimes free seats exist, but do not build your plan on that.

APS: the hidden deadline
For India, China, Vietnam, Mongolia, the APS certificate often controls your calendar more than 15 July.
- Normal processing: 3 to 8 weeks
- Peak season (May to August): up to 12 weeks
Guides:
Rule: If APS is not on track by May, a 15 July uni-assist submit is risky for Winter.
Uni-assist and VPD time you must budget
| Step | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Uni-assist document review | 4 to 8 weeks (longer in June/July) |
| VPD | Similar; order early if required |
| Fees | €75 first university, €30 each extra (calculator) |
Upload complete scans per the uni-assist documents guide. Blurry PDFs cost weeks.
Universities that close before 15 July (examples)
Do not assume one date for all programmes. Check each portal:
- RWTH Aachen: often May
- University of Stuttgart: often mid-May
- Freie Universität Berlin: some programmes May 31
Missing May because July feels far away is the most common intake mistake for APS applicants.
After admission: visa chain
| Step | Typical duration |
|---|---|
| Zulassung received | Day 0 |
| Blocked account + insurance | 2 to 4 weeks |
| CSP Study - APS (India) | 1 to 3 days active work |
| CSP preliminary review | Varies |
| Visa appointment wait | Weeks to months in peak |
| Visa processing after VFS | Several months (India) |
Use the visa timeline tool. Read visa rejection prevention before filing CSP or booking VFS.
Direct apply vs uni-assist
Some programmes use the university portal only. Others require uni-assist or VPD first. The deadline on your programme page is the one that counts.
Final checklist
- Pick Winter or Summer intake first.
- List each programme's own deadline (not a blog's generic date).
- Start APS and language tests early.
- Submit uni-assist in May if you are in an APS country targeting Winter.
- Plan visa and housing backward from arrival month.
